After Israel`s parliamentary elections in April 2019, the leader of the blue-white group, Benny Gantz, acknowledged, paving the way for current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of Likud, to start talks with other parties to form a government coalition. [4] Under the agreement, the government will have 32 ministers in the first phase, then increase to 36 in addition to 16 deputy ministers. Before the election, Gantz promised to form a government that would not include Netanyahu. [34] Attempts were initially made to form a minority government with the external support of the common list, but this initiative failed sharply when MKs Yoaz Hendel and Zvi Hauser announced that they would vote against such a government, citing an election promise not to rely on the common list, which includes “supporters of terrorism” such as Balad. During the COVID 19 pandemic in Israel, Gantz reversed his position and announced that he was ready to support an emergency coalition with Netanyahu. [35] On 21 March, Mr. Netanyahu announced that negotiations for a government of national unity with a rotating prime ministership, in which Mr. Netanyahu would serve first, would be completed and replaced by Gantz, although Gantz denied this and said that negotiations were still ongoing. [36] On 26 March, the day after the resignation of Knesset spokesman Yuli Edelstein, Gantz agreed to become the knesset`s spokesman. [37] [38] The fact that the right in the coalition of Likud Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to support Gantz`s candidacy for the spokesman alliance jeopardized the future of the blue-white alliance. On the same day, Gantz was elected new president of the Knesset with a lead of 74:18. [38] Mr.
Netanyahu is also expected to sign coalition agreements with the ultra-Orthodox and right-wing parties. However, in his response to the details of the agreement, the far-right Yamina said: “Netanyahu is showing us the door.” It is estimated that Palestinians now make up 23 of the Jordanian population.
